Size Matters When Renting a Bounce House
Choosing the right size bounce house can make or break your event. Too small and kids are cramped. Too large and it won't fit your space. Here's how to get it right every time.
Measure Your Space First
Before browsing bounce houses, measure your available area. Every inflatable needs the unit's footprint plus 3 feet of clearance on all sides. Don't forget vertical clearance — check for tree branches, power lines, and overhangs.
For example, a bounce house that's 15' x 15' actually needs a 21' x 21' area (the unit plus 3 feet on each side). The setup area must also be flat and level.
Match the Size to Your Guest Count
Here's a general guide for capacity:
- Small (13' x 13'): 4-6 kids at a time, great for intimate backyard parties
- Medium (15' x 15'): 6-8 kids at a time, our most popular size
- Large (18' x 18'+ or combo units): 8-12 kids, perfect for larger events
- Obstacle courses: Multiple kids simultaneously, ideal for school events
Remember, these are simultaneous capacity limits. At a party, kids rotate in and out, so a medium unit works great even for 15-20 guests.
Consider the Age Range
Age matters as much as guest count:
- Toddlers and preschoolers (3-5): Smaller units are safer and less intimidating
- Elementary kids (6-10): Medium to large units with slides add variety
- Tweens and teens (11+): Water slides and obstacle courses keep them engaged
- Mixed ages: Consider a combo unit so younger kids can bounce while older ones slide
Setup Surface Considerations
Your surface type affects what works:
- Grass: Best option. We stake the unit securely. Avoid freshly watered or muddy areas
- Concrete/asphalt: Works great with sandbags for anchoring
- Indoor (gym/hall): Perfect for any season. Just need ceiling clearance
- Gravel, dirt, or sand: We can do it — additional cleaning fees may apply
Water Slide Sizing
Water slides have additional requirements:
- You'll need a water faucet within 50 feet (we provide the hose)
- Water slides create a wet zone — account for splash area around the exit
- They're typically taller than standard bounce houses, so check overhead clearance
- Can be used dry in cooler weather as regular slides
When in Doubt, Go Bigger
If you're deciding between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the better choice. More space means more fun and fewer conflicts between kids. Plus, adults can join in on larger units!
